„Quite possibly the most advanced AI-enabled smart cart
EXPRESSO presents the latest generation of the SmartShopper® at EuroShop
With the launch of the new SmartShopper® EyeQ at EuroShop 2026 in Düsseldorf, EXPRESSO once again underscores its technological leadership in the field of smart retail. This digital shopping cart expands the company’s existing product range, delivers increased benefits thanks to comprehensive sensor technology, and supports AI features. Large-scale retailers and independent operators can use it to enhance shopper convenience, create additional purchase incentives, and significantly improve operational efficiency. A first retail company in Belgium is already benefiting from the advantages of the SmartShopper® EyeQ.
When EuroShop opens its doors on 22 February 2026, Booth A65 in Hall 10 is likely to be one of the first stops for many retail managers and store operators. That’s where the German company EXPRESSO will unveil the next generation of its digital shopping cart—the SmartShopper® EyeQ. It is the fourth variant within the SmartShopper family and at the same time the new premium model in the series. Few products of its kind combine modern design, high usability, and forward-looking technology so consistently. On the one hand, the new SmartShopper® EyeQ offers ample space for groceries thanks to its two-tier design and is highly maneuverable due to a central fifth wheel. On the other hand, it features intelligence that not only simplifies product selection and payment, but also provides innovative impulses for increasing store efficiency and digitizing sales management. In particular, the systematic interaction of two high-performance displays, several high-resolution miniature cameras, two fast Nvidia chips, and three integrated load cells enables error-free identification of all items. And Karsten Grötecke, Head of Smart Retail at EXPRESSO, already has a clear view of what comes next: “With the SmartShopper® EyeQ, we are laying the foundation for fully automated product recognition without manual scanning. We integrate lean IT architectures such as edge computing, as well as solutions from Vision AI and next-generation product recognition to optimize visual data analysis and make product recognition error-free. The course is set—at Düsseldorf we will present what is quite possibly the most advanced AI smart cart for grocery retail.”

Higher basket values
At EuroShop, EXPRESSO demonstrates how intelligently the new SmartShopper® EyeQ implements item recognition and executes digital weighing and payment processes. “The cart captures the products, and the basket can be retrieved at the store’s express checkouts and paid for,” explains Karsten Grötecke. According to him, the payback period for using SmartShopper® can be “under 12 months, depending on the market situation.”
A smart entry point
The Europe-wide rollout of SmartShopper® technology is currently underway—well-known retail companies such as Belgium’s Colruyt Group have already opted for it. They benefit not only from the high modularity of the SmartShopper® concept, which allows adaptation to various processes in merchandise and sales management, but also from the fact that it can be optimally tailored to different store environments and preconditions. As an entry-level smart retail solution, for example, customers can use EXPRESSO’s EO Smart, where scanning and payment are handled via smartphone—without the need for an app or any other download product. The cost-effective software used here can also be visually aligned with a brand’s corporate design. An alternative is the retrofit system EO Go, which upgrades conventional shopping carts into intelligent, connected cart solutions. In this scenario, customers capture items using a barcode scanner on the cart, eliminating the need to unload and reload groceries at the checkout belt. The system visualizes the current status of a shopping trip and thus enables spending control. The software can be customized, while the hardware can be adapted to all standard shopping cart models. Karsten Grötecke: “With the SmartShopper® EyeQ, we are laying the foundation for fully automated product recognition without manual scanning—and presenting what is quite possibly the most advanced AI smart cart for grocery retail!” SmartShopper® EyeQ in real-world use: two levels for more space—sensor technology and AI automatically capture items, while beverages are simply loaded here.

All-in-one solution and retail media expansion
As a comprehensive all-in-one solution combining cart, technology, and software, EXPRESSO also offers the SmartShopper® EO Complete. In addition, all SmartShopper® models can be expanded with the retail media solution from EXPRESSO partner and big-data specialist Cyreen. This adds a highly innovative Connecting Ad Impressions with Purchase solution (C.A.P.) to the digital shopping cart, beyond the standard sensor and display technology. For retailers, this provides extensive opportunities to analyze customer purchasing behavior, conduct real-time measurements, and deliver highly targeted advertising based on the current contents of the shopping basket. “Conversion rates are significantly higher here than with classic in-store advertising,” says Karsten Grötecke. Equipped in this way, SmartShopper® supports branch managers and store operators in optimizing sales and workforce management: stock and inventory variances as well as disruptions in automated replenishment routines can be avoided, the write-off rate decreases, theft is effectively deterred, and operating costs fall. Staff freed from checkout work can focus on restocking shelves and customer service—leading to higher basket values and increased store revenue.
In addition, trade fair visitors at EuroShop will learn that all EXPRESSO solutions are GDPR-compliant, do not require access to sensitive ERP and POS data, and are based on real-time data integration that does not require a permanent internet connection.
